Lukima Secondary School is located in the village of Maguu in the south of Tanzania near Lake Nyassa not far from the country of Malawi. It was in early 2006 when school inspectors came to inspect our third school in the village of Kising’a that one of the inspectors asked us what he would have to do to get a school in his home village of Maguu – more than 600 kilometers to the south. It wasn’t more than a few weeks later that he went back to his village, shared with people about the work that Village Schools Tanzania was doing, and we received an invitation to come to Maguu to meet with the leaders and then to speak to the entire village.

Lukima Secondary School grew so quickly that it spawned the opening of a nearby sister school in the village of Malindindo in order to serve the many students coming from that village and other villages further to the west. Three other schools have been opened in the Mbinga district – in the villages of Mpepo (near the Mozambique border) and Longa and Ulolela further to the north.

Lukima is currently educating more than 600 students. They have worked hard to put in a water project to bring water to their school from a mountain stream nearly 4 kilometers away. Together they have installed a generator at the school so that they can study at night, and so that their school could be a center for the typing of exams and other teaching materials for all of our other schools in the Ruvuma region. And they continue to work together to make bricks and haul stones and sand to build even more classrooms at their school so that their little brothers and sisters can also get an education.
